Winmodems

Filed under: Technology — Piotr P. Karwasz @ 1:19 am

Two years ago finding and installing the drivers for a Winmodem was quite impossible under linux.

When I bought my box with a Lucent Winmodem, no linux driver for it existed yet. After two or three months google eventually showed me a site where I found the very first beta of the linux drivers.

Obviously much of the documentation was still missing so it was not before some days that I discovered that my HCF modem used the HSF drivers. The installation process wasn’t straightforward neither and the drivers worked only half well.

Yesterday I decided to install the modem drivers for my laptop and I was prepared for the worst… But, to my great surprise the results of google leaded me to the producer’s website, where a supported version of the linux driver could be retrieved. Compiling on my 2.6 box proceeded without problems, even if other proprietary drivers need some tweaking to pass to 2.6. The README of the tarball I get from the producer tell even about a free version of the driver in the ALSA project…

I think that the world is changing in the right way
